Chinese New Year

February 18, 2007

To celebrate Chinese New Year today, Biker and I go to our local Chinese Restaurant for dim sum. We like it here since the head waiter knows us, he knows that I can speak a bit of Canto but cannot read any and he knows that Biker likes roast belly pork and milk custard buns and that we always order too much!

Now, when I was a kid CNY was all about the lai see. That’s right the money – we would always do the rounds of aunts and uncles, my parents friends and those kind of related but not really people whom would still have to give us lai see because that is the tradition. But since being married, I have avoided children like the plague – married people do not receive lai see anymore, they have to give them. Forget that! Even though like my oldest bro, you’re nearly 40 and unmarried you would still get lai see! How bizarre!

So anyway I neither received or gave any today but since will be off to Big sis and sprogs x 2, some lai see will have to change hands.

Anyway, this Chinese Lunar Year is the Year of the Golden Pig. This is meant to particularly auspicious year filled with good fortune! I can’t wait! Biker and I are both born Year of the Dragon and last year was supposedly not a good year for us and this was true. I had a particularly emotional roller-coaster of a year with many many lows and few highs, financially it wasn’t a good year for Biker which is never good plus I had a crash in my car (which wrote if off) and I got done for speeding – twice! Wahhhh! Highs were that Biker and I are back on track after our turbulent year plus I won a car which was a bit of a god send since my other car was written off!

So this year I am hoping for a bit more good fortune. I can deal with what life throws at me and hopefully it won’t be as chaotic and traumatic as last year!

So KUNG HEI FAT CHOI (no lai see, sorry).

    gung hei fatt choy!

Year of the pig is supposedly bad for me – heck, I’ve had bad years for the past 4 years so it wouldn’t make a difference anymore! Every year’s advise is ‘lay low’.

Sorry didnt make it to dim sum – had cake for lunch instead due to my once-a-year vegetaranism.
